The History & Heritage of

Chypraze Farm

Landscape:

For the geologist the granite outcrops thrusting seawards bearing a thin covering of rock strewn soil define the landscape in this part of Cornwall. Together they form the “Lowland Western Heath”, the coastal plain edged by breathtaking 300ft cliffs that creates the unique environment of Morvah, between St. Ives and St. Just.

From an elevated position, anywhere along the coastal road, the sea and sky come together at an unfamiliar angle and the land seems to float in mid air. Colours take on a particular brightness as light in the sky becomes amplified by reflection from the surrounding sea, to the underside of clouds and down again. This special light brings out a buttery hue and crisp relief, draws artists and emboldens their works.
